For as long as I can remember I’ve had a way with animals. Not just the typical, “I love animals” kind of thing. It goes deeper than that. My family tells stories of when I was a baby that any dog, whether ours or a friend’s, would stay next to me and protect me. My fondest memories of my childhood seem to revolve around animals. I had a black lab named Ardie, and we went everywhere together. He walked me to the school bus stop and was there waiting for me when I got off the bus every single day. There was a pond not too far from our house that Ardie and I would visit nearly every day in the summer. He loved to swim there, of course. One day when Ardie and I were at the pond a little turtle took an interest in me. Each time we went down to the pond the little turtle would be there and he would move a little closer to us, until one day it was Ardie, me and the turtle sitting on the bank. That went on for a while until Turtle decided (named him Turtle) that he wanted to leave and go with us. I picked him up and put him back in the pond three times, but he just kept on getting out and following us. It took Ardie and me a lot longer to get home that day; you know how slow turtles can be. One of our neighbors had a beautiful horse named Lucy. About three or four mornings a week I would hear a noise at my bedroom window and yep, you guessed it, there would be Lucy, looking at me as if to say, “Can you come out?” So I would get dressed and ride her home, scratch her in her favorite spot, then run back home. I can’t forget about the birds! If you’ve seen any of my photos, you know how much I love them. I have a cockatiel named Bunker who is definitely part of the family. I could tell a thousand stories of my seemingly magical experiences with God’s precious creatures. I have had people ask if I feed the animals. The answer is no; I’ve never fed a wild animal, nor will I. I just absolutely have a passion for animals, and in some small way, I think they know it. I’ve spent hours studying, watching and listening to the animals. I watch what and how they eat, sleep and play (they have play time just like we do). The animal world is nothing short of amazing. I wouldn’t trade my life for anything.
